So, I now take my laptop to school to study (Lol, JK, I play Minecraft in free periods) and its really annoying me that I cant connect to my schools Wi-Fi.

My Laptop Connects to the Network but it says that the Network has no internet access. All of my friends laptops can happily connect to the internet via the School Wi-Fi.

I've updated all of the Optional Updates on W7 and Updated the Drivers for the Network card, but still nothing.

Laptop is an Acer Aspire 5733. But the most annoying thing is that a friend of mine has the EXACT same laptop as me and he is fine.

Really starting to get on my nerves now so any help would be appreciated.

Does it work on other wifi networks?

I suspect if you look at the adaptor properties you will have an IP address or gateway address statically set.

Network and sharing centre, change adapter settings from left, right click wireless connection, properties, click Internet Protocol Version 4 then properties and everything in there should be automatic.

Assuming you haven't annoyed local tech support who have blacklisted you somehow it's probably simply a case of checking you are getting a valid IP and DNS server when you next connect it.

Next time just open a command prompt and type:

ipconfig /all

It should list IP/subnet/DNS similar to that of your mates laptops if they do the same, if it's not picking one up try to renew it

ipconfig /renew

It's very unlikely to be driver related if it's actually telling you you're connected but have no internet connectivity. Lastly you might need to check with local IT tech to see if he needs your MAC address from your laptop (ipconfig/all gives you the hardware address he needs) or to see if it's something else which is blocking it.

Also check to make sure Windows has detected the network type eg Home, Work as sometimes have found till it detects that it will not connect to the internet.

My Acer did that, would connect to the router at work but said it had no net connection. I think in the end it was the encryption type under the security tab.

How many pupils are there at your school?

If they start fixing personal laptops, they'd never get any proper work done :p

1000+ Pupils :p Only 6th form (Years 12 and 13) are allowed to bring in laptops though. Hardly and of us bring in our Laptops TBH, so I don't see why he couldn't have a look at it.

The IT Tech was playing Skyrim at the time :p

I suspect they may not look at pupils laptops because you can be pretty sure that if they did it for one, they would be expected to do it for others, and if there were any problems afterwards, regardless of if they were related to what the tech had done, some people would blame them (I've heard tales of people blaming techs for their hard drive dying after the tech setup a network connection etc).

As a tech working in a school I can happily tell you now that everything Werewolf has said pretty much covers our standing on it.

Your school will almost certainly have a proxy server, if they have half a brain they'll have a proxy autodetection script setup specifically for student laptops, use internet explorer or google chrome and make sure you have "Automatically detect settings" ticked in the LAN settings section of your internet options.

If that doesn't work then you'll have to find out the proxy settings which presumably your friend will have set (though if he hasn't told you it's most likely WPAD is setup on the network)

If it still doesn't work after all that then the techs may have added you to the deny list in DHCP. Personally I've got a nice managed wireless system where the guest system is open but forces you to login before you can do anything, these logins are created by the receptionist and librarian so that they're nothing to do with us :)
