cant view mkv files over network but can avi (TV)

disclaimer: i'm not network trained.

i shall try and keep this simple.

I am connecting my new tv to my router via wired.
my computer is also connected to this router wired.
I can view avi files via the TV from my computer folder but not the MKV files in the SAME folder. it says file invalid.

Windows 7 64bit home.

help lol ?

PS: i can attach my usb hard drive to the LG tv and view my mkv files so the tv does support this format.
the mkv files play fine on my computer with VLC player.

TV might not support mkv over network , seen that before where they will happily play it off a usb stick

Install Plex on your PC.

That's what i use and LG's TV support playing MKV over the network even using wireless.

i did try that but i havent done that since my XP days

i wasnt sure if i was doing it right in windows 7
seemed different to how i remember.

i right clicked the file and added .avi on the end but it never worked

i'll just stick to my usb hard drive connected lol.

As mentioned above install Plex media server on your pc.

http://www.plexapp.com/getplex/

Don't get it confused with plex client as that will do nothing.

Did you remember to make sure if the original file extension is visible, since if it isn't then all your doing is adding the .avi to the file name.

well the original file name didnt end in .mkv you see.
it is a .mkv file though.

or maybe it did and im so used to just deleting and renaming my downloads

so if i have infact deleted the .mkv is it now a lost cause?

ps: i shall look into plex thanks.

ok installed plex and my tv can see it but how do i add files to plex?
i see update library but it doesnt seem to do anything.
i just want to put my video files into plex, how do i do this?
