Well i've been trying to decide on buying a 7950 or 7970 or wait for Nvidia's new offerings whenever they decide to appear for a while now.
This weekend however I decided to make the most of a certain auction site having a free listing weekend to stick my current gpu's on it and i'm confident both will sell so now I have to get a new GPU.

After a bit of hunting yesterday and today I managed to source an Asus 7970 for £419.99 delivered. It's the same one as OCUK list with the stock cooler but since I will be fitting a waterblock at some point soon I figured the Asus bios would give better overclocking in the future.

Now a 7970 is a little overkill for what I need, but it will do me for at least 3 years and it is the first time in about 8 years that i've bought a new GPU, all my others have been second hand. I intend to go eyefinity at some point later this year once I get a new desk hence choosing the 7970 over the 7950.

So I may be crazy for spending £420 on a graphics card, but hey, it's my birthday next week so happy birthday to me!

Right lastly quick question. I currently run 2x Benq 24 inch screens off the DVI connectors on my 4870x2 and run 1 DVI-HDMI cable from the other 4870 to my main livingroom tv for watching films etc.
Now the 7970 has 1x dvi for 1 of my Benq's and I can use an HDMI cable to the living room tv, but which Mini Display port to DVI connector do I need.
Linkage to OCUK shop would be appreciated!

** just watched a youtube unboxing video for it and all the connectors I need are in the box lol oh well good good! **

These are my thoughts, I'm due a tax rebate soon and I'm tempted to buy an entirely new pc. If i spend 400+ on a gfx card I won't have to buy one for so long it nearly makes sense to spend so much, even though i only game at 1080 and have no intention of getting eyefinity.

When buying anything computer related it's always been sensible to spend as much as you can possibly afford, right up to your limit.

Buying cheap parts for "doofa" (as in do for now) isn't very wise as you will just keep feeling the itch to upgrade.

It works out cheaper to buy the best you possibly can IMO.

I'm more or less funding this upgrade by having a good clearout of stuff on the members market and on an auction site. All in all I think after everythings sold i'll be down around £50 to 80 after buying the 7970.. so thats why I went for the 70 rather than the 50 since I had very little money to add to it.

No it doesn't ! Buying upper mid-range and upgrading more often is the superior approach.

Now imagine if next week, on your birthday, nVIDIA announced kepler... :D

I'm good, once 7970's are around 200-220 mark i'll buy another one :D
Usually you can say "but soon there'll be...." about most pc components. Gotta take the plunge some time!
I didn't buy this card just so I could say I own the best, its just the first real worth while single card that'd actually beat my tripple 4870's. (580 doesn't count, it can only do 2 displays, so it'd never be a single card in my system)
