Looks like I might be going to Canterbury for the weekend in a few weeks time with my girlfriend. Can anyone suggest good restaurants and touristy things to do?

I've had a search and both Cafe Mauresque and Deeson's seem to get good reviews for restaurants. Weather permitting a historic river tour might also be fun. Howletts Wild Animal Park seems not to far away and a good way to spend a day. Any other suggestions?

I had a day to kill in Canterbury and really enjoyed it. In the morning I did the full Canterbury Cathedral tour, tickets from the ticket office in the grounds. After this a visit to the Roman museum/villa and then lunch.

In the afternoon a walk around the historic centre, tickets from the main tourist office. I did go to that office as my first port of call for the day. The rest of the day was spent walking around and a bit of shopping. I had dinner in the Pizza Express which has an area with the windows next to the river Stour and came back to the hotel exhausted.

It was a great day with the Cathedral tour being the highlight of the day. There was a lot more to do but I didn’t want to rush the day. It was a great day.

If you like Italian food, check out the Little Italy restaurant on the high street. They do amazing food in there and at times, it can be quite romantic.

Deeson's is really nice - only been there for lunch but I've heard good reviews from people who have been there in the evening. Also the Mexican Cafe Des Amis is good. Definitely recommend Howletts for a nice day out, only about 10 minutes from centre of Canterbury.

I think it's called Cafe Mauresque. Very, very nice food.

Edit

Hang on, it might even be Cafe Des Amis. I'm going to leave the thread now :D Can't believe I've lived here for 1.5 years and have nothing to add.
