Hi guys,

Well no reinstallation is complete with me unless its fraught with annoying inexplicable problems.

My machine now has a completley fresh Windows installation. Nothing is installed - just Windows, on a brand new HDD.

Except it wont load device manager. If I right click on My Computer and go to Properties, and select Properties, nothing happens. No menu. Nothing.

If I go into Control Panel and double click System - again, nothing happens.

Completely standard Windows install with SP2. Nothing else installed at all!

Why me? It's XP Pro.

And an update already for you. After about 5 minutes of uptime, it suddenly sprung into life and now it works fine - I can get into device manager, everything appears instantly, just as you'd expect.

But for the first 5 minutes after a reboot, it behaves as in my original post.

Any ideas?

Hmmm... it could be a device is still initializing its drivers... hence why it can't access it... not sure how you would find out what it is... Have you tried going into Safe made and seeing if that makes it faster? If so that should eliminate most of your standard devices...

I've noticed that when it 'wakes up' so to speak the Security Centre popup appears at the same time, so clearly something is delaying the system waiting for something.

It seems related to the Webclient service which takes ages to start and sometimes fails to find IIS.

I dont have IIS installed...
