Am running an xfx 5870 @ stock.

Did try clocking a little when new but as the improvement was minimal decided to stick with stock speeds.

BUT did notice that when running furmark (quick way of putting under load etc) i could hear an awful 'squeal'. Read up about capacitor squeal and thought that sounds like what I'm hearing.

Never noticed it playing a game etc so simply forgot/ignored as never a real issue.

About a week ago the psu failed (not bought here!)- Coolermaster m700 - it has been rma'd and waiting to hear but as I had no spare decided to buy a new psu.
Got an Antec True Power 650 and have found the same quiet & stable AND having run furmark find that the 'squeal' has gone !:D

Am now wondering wether it was in fact the psu making the noise? Possible ?? Or am I totally misinterpreting the situation ?

think the squeal is caused by EM interference, as far as im aware its coils that squeal. noticed similar thing on a card a while ago, had Tagan PSU and used to get squeeking sound from 8800GTS, replaced with OCZ Z-series PSU and the sound never reappeared. caused by ripple i think if im remembering correctly and some PSUs naturally have less ripple, the really good quality ones anyway. :)

so it was probably indeed caused by your old PSU, but not coming from it directly, and the new PSU has much lower ripple and better EM shielding, etc. which is whats killed the squeal.

Brilliant explanation - My thanks:D

It's usually caused by cards running at ridiculously high FPS, hence why it's common on loading screens.

I've had a couple of cards that squealed in normal situations and it was too annoying to bare.

If this is the case, why does enabling vsync make it dissapear for me?

Not being picky, genuinely interested to find out. :)

my 8800 used to only squeal under full load, like proper full load. anything below and it would usually be fine, hardly ever did it in games, only benchmarks and other overly stressful situations. :)
