dmpoole said:Mucho respect to the agility and fitness of these guys but is it some kind of mating dance or something?
From WIKIFrom Wikipedia said:Capoeira (IPA: [ka.puˈej.ɾɐ]) is a Brazilian martial art developed initially by African slaves in Brazil, starting in the colonial period. Participants form a roda (circle) and take turns playing instruments, singing, and sparring in pairs in the centre of the circle. The game is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints, subterfuge, and extensive use of groundwork, as well as sweeps, kicks, and headbutts. Technique and strategy are the key elements to playing a good game. Capoeira has two main styles, known as "regional" and "Angola."
ranarama said:Not video but a couple of pics from a trip to Brazil last year below. They were doing lots of cool moves but as is the case in a lot of places there if you want to get pictures someone wants money off you for doing it. Got these and left.
As has been said above it's a non contact thing but it was originally from the slaves who were banned from fighting by their owners so created this 'dance' which if necessary could be used as an attack.

WushuMaster said:Those are good pics, you say they were taken on a trip to Brazil? Where exactly is that? Is it Pellerinho, Salvador? I went there earlier this year so seems familiar.
brocksta said:search for team ryouko on youtube, their vids are pretty cool.
ranarama said:Yes, I took those in Pelourinho, Salvador with my old P&S. I can't say I really liked Salvador as I always felt on edge there compared to the other parts of the country (Rio, Iguacu, Amazon & Buzios). Having got interested in photography since though I'd love to go back with my DSLR but can't see it happening in the near future.
