Hi all,

In my drive to get back into shape I have been looking at things I would love to do, and one of them is capoeira.

I have managed to find a local place in Stoke just 5 mins from where I work but due to testing our new software yesterday I didn't manage to get down there and speak to them.

Now, I am overweight, unfit and very unflexible. I did kickboxing for 2 years when I was a teenager and loved it.

Does anyone here do capoeira or has in the past? What did you think of it?

sports forum ;)

I was going to post it in there but as stated it is classed as a dance as well as a form of fighting. Plus I want peoples general opinions on it not just the sports aspect of it.

Kree: Thanks for the input. Yes I am aware of its history and musical basis, I am looking at more of a form of exercise than actual fighting. once I shape I may go back to kick boxing or something a little more extreme. Tried Tae Kwon do with a friend, fun but just didn't feel right to me, not sure why though.

Had to be posted ^^

Completely fake, I know because I have just watched 'Never Back Down' and it is a clip from that.

While the above reply is a tad obnoxious he does have a point... if I was a portly chap and looking to get fit and learn how to stick up for myself then Capoeira would probably be last on my list, at least until I got fit and lost weight as many of the moves are very tough to pull off if you're not pretty athletic. OP, if you loved kickboxing then give it another try. :)

I dont need to learn to stick up for myself, I can already do that. My reason for doing it is fitness and flexibility. Although over weight I am not in that bad shape, I can easily out perform many friends who are skinny and to look at me you would say I was stocky, not fat.

The main drawback is my flexibility, and this should help out greatly with that.

Once I feel comfortable I may return to kick boxing or try Muay Thai, or maybe move onto one of the more mixed/hardcore martial arts.
