Why is it that captchas on some sites just do NOT work?!

You can clearly see it but no matter how many times you try, it just doesn't work... what the hell is it with this, how can they stop working and why? :/

in fact, another well known website login just wasn't working either after resetting the password numerous times and ringing up to get them to reset it...

just annoys you :@

They're okay if they alright to get, if they're really garbled, then it's just pointless. And yeah, it's really annoying when you clearly get it right, but it throws you a "incorrect blah blah" message.

Oh those things have a name. Never heard the word captcha before in my life. :p

Anyone remember the mental ones Rapidshare used to have?

The problem is the spam. The spam. The spam. Ive just deleted 3600 inactive users from my clans site. These bots got past the captcha and failed at the email registration. It drives you spare!

If it wasn't for spam we wouldn't have these silly codes in the first place :(

Yes they have started to really irk me lately, they use really stupid fonts and stuff so you can't read it half the time.

Ha, did you guys hear porn sites were getting around captchas by displaying the captcha image from a site their bot was trying to register and getting the user to type it in for them.

That#s pretty sneaky but I guess the explains the load of spam on ocuk lately...

Arsenal ticket website has to be THE WORST for this. I don't mind the idea in principle, but they have some really warped ones.

The way forward is simple questions that bots simply don't understand. For Vbulletin forums, and the general idea, see here.

They are easy for humans to answer, but since bots can't understand questions, its almost impossible for them to get in. One site I'm a regular on was getting 30+ spambots a day, using the standard VB captcha. Put a question in, and no more bots.
Obviously, a unique question for your site is needed, but that's hardly difficult to do.

Rapidshare cats did my head in!

Oh and...

I'm not talking about the hard to read ones... im talking about the ones that you can read, perfectly but they just do not work :P oh yeah ok... I got it wrong 30 times even though if I take a picture, send it to everyone on my msn list, getting the same answer from the lot yet it still says it is wrong! what the hell is wrong with this?!

I remember the one for WoW billing support, again it didn't work full stop... was broken.

Although I opened the thing in IE8 rather than the BETA Firefox and it worked straight away... dependant on the browser if it works or not?

and in regards to iviv... then they develop a bot that works for just your site :D but then again they don't unless insanely popular and worth developing a bot for...
You could just use EZMacros
