Capture card instead of Fraps

I want to use a capture card to record PC gameplay (not console gameplay) instead of fraps, does anybody know how this would be possible?

I guess you could use an HDMI capture card, there are a few out there that allow HDMI passthrough (one input and one output). But that would only be of use if you were using HDMI (or converted DVI-I, but you'll lose sound) as your video-out from your PC.
