Capturing console gameplay?

Yes, there is also another quality one which is AverMedia Game Capture HD which is little cheaper. If you're not planning 2 record in HD get something like an Easycap which is much much cheaper.

I use the Hauppauge HD PVR Gaming edition when I'm faffing about recording, comes with all the connection to fit the 360, PS3 and Wii.

Thanks for the links to kit and that article however, I don't understand those boxes - do I have to connect them to my PC so that they have something to record to? Or does the Hauppage box record to an internal disc that I can then access from the PC later?

I know how to do PC game capture, but I'm genuinely quite baffled by the console capture stuff.

I believe it runs the picture from your TV to your PC where the software it usually comes with can record the stream from the TV. Not entirely sure but I believe that's what happens.

You connect the console to the Hauppauge using the component cable which comes with it, (like I said the gaming edition as all the connections for all the consoles).
Then connect the Hauppauge to your TV via component (which also comes with the recorder) then connect to your PC via USB.

You get the software with it to. which then display what you see on your TV on your PC, then just press capture.

Also here's a video explaining it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoRI6srYEyg

You connect the console to the capture device, which has a passthrough to your TV and a USB to your PC. It includes software to record and edit the footage.

Hauppage (I think, don't quote me) do one with a built in hard drive so you dont need your PC on or even near the device, but I cant remember its name.

This will only work over component. You cannot use this with a HDMI cable without an adapter (Like HDFury) becuase the PS3 uses HDCP, even in games (Xbox360 doesn't :D)
