I've got a Compro VideoMate S350 inside the kids pc and was wondering if it could be used to capture xbox footage?

Both the xbox and pc are connected to the same TV.

If you buy the capture card linked by Jamsames I wouldn't use the bundled software, download the free "Amcap" application. Or if you don't get the one he suggested just make sure the capture card supports 60 Hz recording.

As for recording on the laptop does it have any video ports that you recognition that are not VGA? Possibly S-Video?

What you need to do it properly is this mate

YOUR BASKET
1 x Hauppauge HD PVR Video Recorder £137.98
Total : £137.98 (includes shipping : FREE).

The Xbox plugs into the PVR. The PVR is plugged into the TV so he view/play the game on there. The PVR is also connected via USB to a PC and obviously a AC adapter for power to take care of the recording.

HD-PVR is the only value and ease of setup on the market, but the price is a little out of my limit. It records in 720p I think; I'm not too sure. I have a few friends using this device and it seems to be good quality when they've uploaded a video onto YouTube for me to watch.

You need something like this to use your S350 to capture audio + video.
You can get all this cable from the auction site for around £5-£6 posted.

To capture video you can use the RCA (yellow cable, composite) or the S-video (All gray round connector).

Connect this 3.5mm adapter to the Red and White RCA cable shown above and plug the 3.5mm to the all metal (stainless) 3.5mm socket on your S350 (this is for the audio).

The only downside with this is you will be using the PC monitor to play the xbox game while you capture the footage unless you want to spend more and get some splitters.
