Car change ideas?

Currently got a ‘64 VW Passat (b7) estate. It’s a 2L tdi 177ps manual ‘executive style’ trim. I use it to tow my caravan (1700Kg).

Thinking of changing car but don’t want an SUV or another VW. Must be 200bhp+ and diesel, prefer 3L.

What Honda or Toyota options are there?
 
Diesel and Honda do not go together. They've only done smaller diesels and the only "not an SUV" that comes even close to the requirements is the Accord which has been out of production for years now.
Toyota, same deal. It's all about hybrids for them. They do a few diesels but they're small capacity unless you're looking at a Landcruiser.

What about a 530d? You can get an early G30 530d for £20k

With your criteria, the A6 3.0tdi springs to mind, but not sure how it compares to the BMW. Possibly in Avant form.

From a quick wiki search, Quattro looks to be standard if that benefits towing in any way. The current shape was launched in 2018, so I'd imagine it's relatively comparable to the BMW.
