Hey guys ive got a problem with me car's cooling and being a total noob i dont have a clue what to do and with money being tight i was hoping to find the problem before taking it to a garage

The car is a Toyota Carina E Exec 2L 16v (Lreg 1993) not the best car in the world but my dad gave it to me when i past my test.

I'll start from the begining. A few mths ago i noticed in trafic that a jet of water was coming from the front of my car spraying the van that was in front of me, ok got home found out my rad had holes, Bought a new 1 fitted all was ok. now a few weeks after i noticed the car getting hot and blowing cold air, dad and i came to the conclusion that it was the water pump, bought a new 1 couldn't fit it due to no tools so of to the local garage which they done ok.

/Breathe

Right when we drive it now after every 25-35miles the car will start blowing cold air but with the car temp guage reading normal and we would have to refill the rad which will only accept 1/2 - 3/4 of a pint water after that we can go 25 - 25 miles again :(

The other day i was on my way to Tesco when i hear a loud bang and see some steam from my bonnet, i pulled over and had a look and to my supprise there is a 6inch split ontop of the rad (must have been hell of a lot of preasure there)

I have no idea what this problem could be any of u wise people have an idea?

Ive been told that the head gasket is going? does this sound right? ive checked the oil and is not milky, ive also been told that my thermostat is stuck shut, so checked the book and if it was the top water pipe would be cold but its not

Im at a loss guys and im skint atm so would like to solve this problem before taking it to a garage

Many thanks for your time

Boo

Definitely sounds like the head gasket has gone.

If the rad pipe split open, it means that the cooling system was over-pressuried. The gasket is letting combustion gases into the cooling system.

One thing though, did you bleed the system when you fitted the new rad? If it still had air in the system, the water wouldn't have been able to flow around the system causing the cold air from the blowers and thus allowing the engine to overheat causing the headgasket to go.

Yeah we followed it by the book, Damn if it is the head gasket how much is that going to cost via a garage or is it a job that can be done by one's self?

edit: it wasn't the pipe that split open but the actual rad that spit on top about an inch from the refill cap and then 6inch in length

grr :( well the local garage we went to to change the water pump charged me £220 and we supplied the pump. i dont think im gonna like a quote for a head gasket then :( /sulk
