Car dock compatible?

I just got a VW Polo and it has an iPod dock; in the manual is says its suitable for 5th gen (30 & 80 GB) models. Would a newer 6th gen fit?

Is it an actual iPod dock or just a 3.5mm stero connector.

I only say because my dad bought a car that had an 'iPod connection' that turned out to be a standard 3.5mm stero jack in the glove box

Its a dock; I just don't want to buy am iPod specifically for it if it wont fit. I'll get some photos up at a later point
