Car for the wife!

My missus is looking for a car so she can bum about town, go to work and socialize with her friends. as usual, i'm paying for it! :rolleyes:

i've scraped together about £15k total for the car, but prefably want something in the +/- £10k (or lower, prefably) range.

she occasionally goes to Bath and back on shopping, but spends most of her time in town traffic and buming to school and back.

i want something that looks fairly 'sporty' without the price-tag (if you know what i mean), something classy that won't break the bank.

the only specifics are:
-auto or manual, i don't care. although i'm edging towards an autobox for the missus. we've had autoboxes before and she likes them (yet is also well aquainted with ze manual).
-something 1.4-1.8 in size.
-no fancy engine gadgetry thingy doodahs (turbos et all)
-pas
-must have airbag
-remote central locking
-abs brakes
-no older than 5 years old.

so, guys, spec me a car! (p.s. i'm absoltely **** at choosing a car, hence the thread! what i know about a car i can write on the back of a fag packet).
p.s. dont' care how many previous owners, but please justify all recommendations.
 
i suppose the new mini's might be an option, i'll have to find a few dealerships around here that actually has a few on display.
 
thanks for the replies guys. i'm gonna drag her around some showrooms and just point out some of the above cars to her and see which ones takes her fancy.

if you have a car in mind for her at all, make sure she sees one in a "nice colour". No good showing a good car in a bad colour to a woman.
