Morning all,

This is my first foray into the Motors section, and I'll freely admit I know nothing about cars.

I have £5k to get a new car, and really not sure what is or isn't worth looking at.

I'm looking for 1.4-1.6, 5 door, manual. Trying to keep the upkeep costs to a minimum, ie. tax, insurance etc. Last two cars have been lemons, so something reliable is a must.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry for thread hijack, i'm in a similar situation but am a new driver. Would a Fiesta be up there in terms of the focus for recommendations? I ask because i've found it's cheaper on insurance and we've already got a Zafira for the 5 Door carry people and stuff around option?

Looking around the same spec and price, tried a Ceed and an i30 today (playing spot the difference). Wasnt quite up to the Focus driving wise i tried, but cheaper, better kit and in Ceed case still got 2 years bumper to bumper warranty. The engines (1.6) seemed to have a bit more poke than the fords and better MPG, just a suggestion to try though. I will prob be shot down by the focus forum but they do seem to be good cars if not maybe as good as the focus, but better VFM and the warranty is pretty handy.

My last two cars have been Fiesta's, excellent reliability and cheap to run.

Lol E39.

All depends on your criteria, whether you are a car enthusiast or not, sounds like you need a box to move you around functionality, so req would be cheap , economical and reliable.
City/shorter distances....
A simple toyota or honda is ideal, reliable and straight forward, rather uneventful.
Fiesta , cheap runaround.
Micra relable.

Focus more fun.
