My father has recently passed away. One thing that we just thought about tonight is the status of the car insurance. I have his policy, but it's incomplete so doesn't say. There is a named driver on the policy (his wife). However, my mother has been driving the vehicle for the last couple of days whilst I've been driving hers (she's insured to drive another insured vehicle under her policy and I'm a named driver on hers).

Generally speaking, does the policy run out on death or what?

He's (he was) with the Post Office.

Cheers.

Sorry to hear that.

When my dad died the car insurance policy was in his name (with my Mum as a named driver), the policy (with eSure) was immediately "void" / cancelled. There was no grace period at all IIRC.

Sorry to hear about your loss mate.

Not sure whether you're asking whether his wife can legally drive it or whether its legally insured and legal to be on the road.

It'll probably differ from insurer to insurer. But best give them a call in the morning and store the car off road as a precaution until you've spoken to them.

Yes, I shall phone them tomorrow. Just fancied some insight at this point as a few of us are discussing it now.

If there isn't a period of grace I can see all sorts of problems being sorted (the named driver doesn't have a UK licence).

Just one of those things that popped up earlier this evening that none of us have thought about.

Sorry for your loss :(

My father died last year and I was left in exactly the same situation. It is highly likely it will differ between insurers, however with SAGA the following applied:

1. The policy was paid in full at the time of commencement.
2. The policy had several months (four IIRC) left to run on the vehicle
3. My father was the only driver insured by the policy
4. The policy was fully comprehensive.

Saga stated that if a willing party could be named as a driver on the policy then it would not be cancelled, however any additional premium would have to be paid in full.

Therefore a family friend of similar age/circumstance as my father agreed to be the named driver and we paid a £35 admin charge only. The policy ran to it's end as and the family friend never actually drove the vehicle, although was fully comprehensively covered by the policy.

The vehicle was worth almost £10k so the insurance was purely to protect us against theft of the vehicle.

Hope this helps.
