Sold my Focus ST a week ago but have not yet called my insurance company, I want to keep the policy going so I don't loose any NCB i've built up in the past 10 months.

Thought I could change the policy to my other halfs car but they won't insure it as I don't own the vehicle, what other options are their as I really don't want to cancel the policy but at the same time, want to be able to use her car if i need to.

I did the same thing, when I scrapped my Proton Persona (re-badged mitsi lancer) and bought my Honda prelude kwik fit insurance wouldn't move my policy over as they refused to insure me on a group 19 car so they recommended I take monthly insurance out on itwith another company and keep my main policy till the NCB kicked in, so I did (with ecar.co.uk), then used the NCB from Kwik Fit to insure my Prelude with with Ecar for a year :)

Im fairly sure that using another car third party requires it to be insured, i.e you either have to insure it yourself or get somebody else to, its better of just insuring it and driving on that insurance

As has been said many times, completely depends on the policy, and remember you can't leave it parked on the public highway (as once you get out, it's uninsured).

Can you not ask the insurer to put the policy on hold while you sort out another car?

if its insured elsewhere they most probably wont cover you for that reason, however if its uninsured i dont see why they wouldnt cover it

Would you now need to inform them that you are no longer the registered keeper of the vehicle though?

Not being funny, just curious as to how it works.

Ok so just letting my policy carry on as is I can still use any other car with third party cover ?

Absolutely not - your drive other cars cover is now void. You'll notice in your policy documentation it states the cover is available provided you 'Still have your car, and it has not been damaged beyond repair'.

You should phone your insurer immediatly and inform them you have sold the car. You no longer have an insurable interest in this car, it does not belong to you, so you have no right to hold an insurance policy on it and indeed you could be causing the new keeper problems by doing so!
