Hi everyone

I am in need of some car help please.

My brother drives a 2005 Toyotoa Corolla it's done 50K and is a 1.6 petrol automatic.

A few days ago he stated that the car was "over-revving" and he could smell a burning smell from his car whilst driving, he also stated the brakes felt stiff- and the car was losing power.

All seemed well, he carried on driving for 3-4 days straight - and no issues.

However today, whilst driving on a normal 40mph road the car started to over-rev again, losing power, and it came to a hault. The engine starts with no problems no dashboard faults/light come up either, but the car wouldn't move forward, opened the bonnet and could spell a burning smell

After 20 minutes of waiting, the car moved again..

Does it seem like a brake-fault? Does anyone have any suggestions

Thank you for taking your time to read this post :)

Gearbox, if you are in the AA call them out for a free diagnosis.

Damn! :( It's an automatic gearbox - Planning on taking it to the local-independant garage tomorrow is that a good idea mate?

Yea get it in there try and choose one thats recommended to you.

If it's the gearbox, I would try to find a gearbox specialist. I've had 3 knackered gearboxes on various cars over the years and a gearbox specialist has always been significantly cheaper than a regular garage for me.

Thanks for the input everyone..

I'm guessing an automatic gearbox including labour is gona probably cost him about £1500!

:( sad times no chance its anything else then ?

Where abouts are you out of interest i know a very good auto gearbox place in Kent.

Unlucky, but to be fair its his own fault for taking such **** care of his car. How long did he go without a service?! Tell him I said hey :)

Hi mate

located in the midlands area, Warwickshire.

Out of interest does the whole gearbox usually need to be replaced in such circumstances - i guess someone would have to probably have a look at the car to answer that q!

They recondition the gearbox, its going to be a grand ish.

As NVP said though get it diagnosed first.

Being a Saturday most garages did not take a full look at the car today.
However, one garage thinks it's a fault in the braking system possibly a caliper or a pipe, but can't say anything for certain until later on the week when he takes a full look at it.

Will keep everyone posted. Fingers crossed for the bro it's nothing major (over 1k)

I think I may have found the cause..well maybe!

Just looked at his automatic gearbox fluid..it's thick ugly and black!

I think if that gets changed it could fix this issue!

Its possible it could fix it but the damage could already be done and also id have to question how he managed to burn it in the first place (i.e is this the problem or the result of the problem) as there is no way any kind of spirited driving in a Corrola should be able to get the ATF that hot.

Hi mate
tnx for your advice
Im pretty sure that the transmission fluid has never been changed...so i thought it had de-graded over time hence why it got hot

When you say " over-revving" " burning smell" and "loss of power" it make me think the clutch is slipping perhaps?

Hi mate,

I checked the ATF yesterday and it was thick and horrible seems like it's never changed.

Apparently when the car displays the fault..which it only does so every now and then maybe twice in 8/9 trips the above symptoms do happen

After waiting 20-30 mins, its okay to drive again :S

Booked in for thursday so hopefully they will find something not too expensive other then this the cars been solid as anything

Hello all

A garage had a look at the car today they said

It is the brake caliper on one of the front wheels and the brake piston was getting stuck. He needs to replace the caliper and the front brake pads - the back were low too so getting him to replace those pads too

Apparently the gearbox is okay

thanks for everyones help on this thread
