Car keyed

Long story short I broke up with someone on Tuesday and this morning I've gone out and seen the driver side doors have both been keyed, I can only assume who it was as there's no CCTV and it's parked outside in a residential parking area.

The car is a Peugeot 208 on PCP for another year and a bit.

So basically what should I do? Any rough ideas on the cost to get it repaired?

From what I understand I can either file a police report for vandalised property then claim it from insurance, or pay for it to be fixed myself (I assume if I file a police report then repair it myself, insurance wouldn't be happy as I've reported it to police but not them?).

Don't really want to take the hit on insurance for the next 5 years, even though I've got no claims I'd imagine it's still going to impact the insurance cost quite a bit and I'll have so much excess (£300 for accidental damage or fire and theft, would it fall under these?) to pay too.

I’d just file a report and then get it repaired myself if you don’t want to go down the insurance route. Would doing this really be wrong?

How much do you reckon it would cost to get 3 'scratches' repaired professionally?

My main concern is fact it's PCP and I intend on handing it back next year, so anything out of place they'll note and likely charge me for it, so I don't want to go get it done at a garage then next year get stung a second time when handing it back.

As for reporting to police and not insurance, I have no idea, I wasn't sure if maybe insurance companies have access to some database on vandalism reports against cars? so wouldn't want to report to police and insurance end up voiding my insurance as I didn't report it to them.

It’s not an accident so I don’t think you’d be required to tell them, someone might come along and correct me but it would surprise me.

If you're pretty sure your ex or someone associated with them did it and you don't want to go through insurance, report the issue and leave the scratches as is.

Go and get some quotes to repair the damage, then before you hand the car back get it fixed.

I don't know your situation, but getting it repaired now only to possibly have it damaged again, seems a waste of time.

Have you checked your policy?

Happened to us and vandalisim is covered with no loss of claims bonus

I'm covered and no loss of NCB but I have to pay excess (300) and I'd have to declare for 5 years.

I mean I've never had a car vandalised before and the timing is too coincidental? I could be wrong obviously.

I was considering that, but as it's scratched through the paint my concern is wouldn't it be more likely to have issues with rust etc given the deep scratch?

If you are going to get the repair done yourself then I wouldn’t report it to my insurance company. It’s sort of akin to getting rid of parking scuffs and/or alloy refurbs as far as I’m concerned, neither of which I’d report.

Yeah my concern is you wouldn't report them to the police either, so there wouldn't be any 'record' of it really, where as with police report it's then actually recorded, so can Insurance see this information.

So for example in 6 months I claim for something else, can my insurance then see I made a vandal report 6 months ago and void my policy as I didn't notify them of an incident?

They can't just put your name in and see any police reports you made. You would need to supply them the information to go off. The insurer is just a company, not a government agency.

Okay cheers, I was under the impression they'd have some sort of shared databases so wasn't sure exactly what was shared.

I'll report it to police tomorrow then.
