The car is a '56 plate Mazda 6 2L, that I have had for a couple of years. Its done around 85,000 - has been serviced regularly (yearly) and is due the next one around August I think. Though its a local garage and I think he's mainly only done oil & filter.

It has the onboard fuel calculator and its always run at about 12.7 litres / 100 miles avg (35.8 mpg). I have reset it a few times over the last couple of years, but since the last reset a few months ago the fuel usage has been creeping up.

Its now running at 14.1 L / 100 (32.2 mpg)

My type and style of driving hasn't changed, so just wondering what are the likely culprits for this.

I was thinking fuel filter, air filter....or anything else it could be?

Tyres - wear, pressure, alignment can have an impact.

I'll have a look at that. TBH, I did used to generally drive with them under inflated at around 26 PSA, not intentionally - just I never checked the manual :p, to the advised 32 PSI.

But I would have thought that would be worse. Oddly though, I don't like the handling as much with them at 32, seems much more floaty.

The front set are fairly new with good tread and I got the rears checked recently, they are low but still legal. A few months left in them I was told.

Weather, probably, if you reset it before winter.

I did think this, but it's run pretty consistently at 12.7L for the last 18 months, with +/- a few 0.xx during winter to summer, not this much.

How busy are the roads? I've noticed that traffic in the morning and evening is only gradually getting worse. Might not be a huge increase for you to take notice of, but obviously, slowing down and accelerating a little more will decrease economy.

perhaps the car has just become a little less efficient as its got older?
