Thinking about doing this for my current car, has anyone ever done it, what spec did they go for? Did a search of the forum but didnt seem to return very much

Something thats just been shown on the BBC but all i am asllowed to say is! Runs at 5v, 256mb, 700mhz, 64GB, and im using a 10'' touch screen i bought off the bay for £20

I installed a car pc a few years ago.

I wouldn't do it again.

I had a base mini base unit in the boot, a nifty 12v PSU. A double din touchscreen. This was connected to a 5 channel amp with 4 speakers and 1 sub. I spent lots on getting the components and installation.

I had visions of GPS, Gigs of MP3s, videos, internet etc.

When it worked, it was fine, but ended up just being for MP3s.

At the time, it took time for the PC to boot up. It was useless for shorter journeys. I had to buy a remote power button to turn / reboot the PC as I needed.

These days, I have a head unit with USB reader, an external USB mini hard drive and a Garmin GPS unit and an android phone for mobile internet. That seems to be all I need.

I'm sure with mini ITX, SSD and better quality head units it would be a better experience, but I'd rather spend the money on a iPad or Android tablet that I could take on car journeys.

I hope this had provided some insight..

What are your reasons for wanting this setup?

Just really for mp3 mainly, seen a few a couple of years ago really well built into a glove box onto a touch screen just liked the idea of that ! but if bootup time was slow then might avoid that, also if its built into the car less chance of getting it pulled out

You can get double-din touch screen head units with all the same features, that would be much better imo. I know someone who runs a car-pc, although it's used more for showing engine information and live mapping.

Interesting thread, had friend who had LinITX CarPC case & wanted me to build him the rest of a car pc.

After doing some research, it wasn't going to be easy to integrate everything he wanted, so I declined the work.

Have a look at this link & see what can be achieved.

There a lot of companies who cater for it. 1 company even supply an OS that includes media player, DVB, radio and navigation.
For the effort you'd go to and the features you'd get, it's better to get a dedicated double din navi. (if you have double din)

I've got a Pioneer AVIC F930bt and I tout of swapping, by time I'd specked it, my AVIC comes out on top.

Yeh got double din mate, twin turbo legacy import ill get a look see whats on the market

Looked into it myself a good while ago the resolutions on the head units are not very good.and there is lots of messing around as each brand (e.g ALPINE) has its own kind of connector for video ( e.g.) alpine is RGB and is a d shape with around 13 pins. i would just get something like an ipad or notebook. my alpine double din head unit lets me plug my iphone in and watch movies off this.
