Hi
I have a problem with my very battered Suzuki ignis.

Basically for the last few weeks its been running very rough after been left for a few hours.
The car has no power, vibrates a lot, likes to cut out when you slow down after starting.

Then after a few miles it comes back to life, acts all normal.

Did take it to my local garage today but couldn't find the problem, thing is i cant spend a lot on it and its costing me too much is fuel at the moment.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'd get rid of it if you can't afford either it or the fuel. Maybe think of a small motorbike if public transport is no good to you.
Andi.

Problem is I need a car for work and to pick up my kids.

What I meant about money is that I can afford to fix it but don't want to waste money replacing parts that wont help, basically what the garage said to me today as they wasn't sure what was wrong.

The fuel issue is relegated to my car, I used to get about 70 miles ish to a tenner of fuel but I'm lucky to get 40 at the moment.

Generally (and I am being broad here) faults like this are either fuel related or ignition related. What did your local garage actually do to it to try and diagnose the fault?

The garage was bit vague in what they did.

They said they checked the plugs, repaired crack in air housing, changed a pipe and few other bits.

I did get the impression they wasn't interested or too much work tracking down the problem.

I see your replies, it sounds like you need a better garage. Can you let us know where you are and maybe someone here can suggest a local place.
Alternatively see if a mobile mechanic can pop out and have a look. I find the mobile guys seem more interested sometimes.

Take it somewhere else. So much apathy and general laziness in the motor repair trade, lots of places just cannot be bothered to look at anything that isn't a blindingly obvious fault.

Doubtful, I can't remember the last time I heard of a plug failing, they last much longer than they used to do. As said get a second opinion at a different garage.

He was likely generalizing a spark problem as "plugs". As you aluded to, it's more likely to be a HT lead failure than the plug itself.

Either way the engine sounds like it's not running properly, be that a sensor problem (like airflow), a fueling problem, or a spark problem.

If money's tight I'd suggest finding a mate who is handy with a set of spanners if you're not yourself and going down to a local scrappy's, and stripping off a load of parts (as suggested, anything spark related) and going from there. These parts don't have to last long, it's only to help diagnose the problem. You should pick up everything short of an alternator for the price of a set of leads. Replace the parts until the problem goes away, then you know what's causing it and can replace with new if necessary.

Thanks Guys for your help.

Booked into another garage for next week, one of the fitters at work owns it so maybe I have better luck this time.
