I recently turbo'd the MX5 and all was going well. Air fuel ratios are fine and I was working towards a really good fuel map while driving about with reletavely low boost.

Tonight I hit a problem. I looked down and found the water temp through the roof, so immediatley turned the car off. I checked the temp on my laptop through the tuning cable and the temp reported there was normal (around 95c).

When I restarted the car (after approx 2 mins), the gauge on the car was back to the normal position. I thought it was simply a faulty wire going to the gauge.

I drove off in first gear and all of a sudden the car starts kangarooing and sounding terrible, like its running on 3 cylinders.

After investigation I found out that:

  • There is no water in the oil to suggest a head gasket failure.
  • The oil pressure is good (the gauge on the dash is reporing around 4 as normal and this doesn't fluctuate)
  • On removal of the spark plugs I found that one of them is coated in oil
  • The car starts and idles (roughly)
  • The air fuel ratio is fine as it should be

Until I a compression test, does anyone have any ideas whats happened?

I had though that if I melted a piston or something I'd know all about it... The engine wouldn't turn over etc? I'm not sure.

Help!
