Car reccomendations for my old man

My old man has decided to buy himself a new car.

He dosen't drive that much and I don't think he even likes driving to be honest. A few miles to work and back everday, shopping and thats pretty much all he uses his car for. Once or twice a year he might have a run up to see family up north, approx 200 mile drive.

He's had a Kia Pride for the past 9 years so I think anything he buys will be an improvement lol. I'm not sure on his budget but at the moment he's looking at brand new Citroen C2's so I guess around 7-9k.

He likes the new Fiesta, but the cheapest brand new one he's seen is closer to 10k and he's one of those people who can't see any difference than price. The quality/comfort/ride experience dosen't seem to bother him which is why he's been driving around in a Pride for the last 9 years lol.

I've tried to convince him to buy second hand, say a year or 18 month old car but all he says "why would they be selling if there was nothing wrong with it".

So, OCUK, how can I try and convice my Dad to go for the Fiesta rather than the Citroen, or some stupid little Hyundai Amica/Kia Picanto. He'll be running it down to the ground I should imagine until he buys his next new car, and i'm sure the Fiesta will be last longer and have a higher resale value should he come to sell it sooner.

Thanks.

Toyota Corolla.

A car built for those who see cars as white goods. They never go wrong (even without servicing) and will last until the end of time.

personally I would avoid the corolla, the build quality on ours is shocking, buy a toyota not built in the UK

Grande Punto looks nice.

If he considers French cars the Fiat will be an improvment in reliability ;)

What about a Skoda Fabia?

My grandparents just bought a brand new 1.2 Ambiente for £8000, with metallic paint thrown in... it's got a fair amount of kit (Air conditioning, CD player, remote locking) and seems very well put together.

He seems to be looking mostly at the money side of it (i know you have to, but he is doing it exclusively, so use this to your advantage, tell him that if he buys a new car he is going to lose 10-15% of the cars value just by driving it from the forecourt. Show him that a car with, say 10,000 miles on the clock that is 12 months old is a LOT better value than one which is new. People sell cars all the time, just so they can get a better one. Each car suits different people. Maybe someone would be selling their car cos it hasn';t got enough power for them? but maybe it has enough for your dad..

Also Fiesta ST/Focus ST is the way forward in life :D

ask him if he genuinely thinks that every single 18 month old car is faulty, then ask him why, if 18 months is the honeymoon period for a new car, the manufacturers give 3 year warranties with them?
