Hi guys,

Are some cars actually more reliable than others? My view is that any car is reliable than any other car as long as you maintain it well. A friend of mine said he'll never buy a used car. So his got a new Fiesta which is falling apart because he doesn't look after it. Quite interesting actually.

Design flaws and over complications make for an unreliable car, no matter how well you maintain these they will always be less reliable than other better made / researched cars, component quality also plays a big part in making something last.

Regular servicing will go a long way to improve reliability but some cars / designs are just fundamentally flawed.

As someone who's had both very reliable and very unreliable cars, I'd say yes there is a big difference in reliability.
Although maintenance does apply of course. Some cars are quite high maintenance so if you dont keep up with it then the issues will stack up and the vehicle may seem unreliable.

Yeah some people buy new cars because they are worried about things going wrong on old ones. If they actually added up how much they are losing in depreciation then I bet you could buy and old car and replace pretty much everything for less than the new car!

Nah, I well maintain my 106GTi and its been pretty crap. In general Hondas, Nissans and Toyotas are considered to be the most reliable.

Absolutely.

I generally find that volume cars are more dependable than nich market vehicles. Modeos, Vectras, Avensis' etc tend not to go wrong anywhere near as much as BMWs, Audis, Mercs etc.
This is mainly due to the sheer volume of equipment on presige brand cars.

As a general rule I'd go along with that. Of course there are exceptions.

I was thinking in terms of the mass market side. Laguna's for example seem to have more than their fair share of gremlins.
ah gotcha, i thought you meant there were niche market vehicles that could also claim to be super-reliable.
personally, i share Rilot's opinion.

I got a Rover I havent started since last spring, till yesterday. Connected the battery back up, checked the oil and 5 seconds later it runs fine. 14 years old and double digit number of owners.
You cant really assume anything is my point, just do the research on whatever car interests you. Every car has its faults imo
