Hi all,
today the o/h was reversed into in a supermarket car park, she had reversed out of the bay and was stationary at the time when some bloke reversed out of his bay opposite and caused a small dent in the passenger front wing.
He has asked to not go through the insurers which in principal we are fine with.
He said a friend of his would be able to fix the dent and assume he works as a mechanic.
My take on this is that we take it to a known bodyshop for a propper quote at the very least and if it turns out that his friend is not in the trade we insist the work is done at a reputable garage/bodyshop.
Having not been in this situation before does this sound fair?
Also do we need to call our insures just to inform them or do we go ahead and just get it sorted without doing so?

Thanks guys.

If its just the wing I'd ask for £200 and go scrappy and buy a replacement in same colour. Wouldnt tell the insurance or you will have to declare the accident on renewal.

if you go through insurance yours will rise as well as unfair as it may seem that's the way it is. Also if he doesn't admit fault and claims you were both reversing out it will probably go knock for knock so it's unfortunately in your interest to let him get it repaired.
Of course saying that you want to ensure it is done to a standard you are happy with but i wouldn't be trying to hit him with some high quotes.

If you do inform them then you will have to declare it for the next 5 years when renewing.
