Do you have your car serviced every year? I'm not interested if you do it yourself as I don't know the first thing about cars but I'm thinking of buying a 'new' car by the end of the year and wondering whether it's worth servicing my current car?

I've had my trusty S reg SEAT Ibiza serviced the past couple of years along with it's MOT, and now it's MOT is up in the next couple of weeks and I'm debating whether to have it serviced and ***** another £250 on it.

The brakes make a funny noise (like metal clashing together) but I think that's to do with the linkage. Would it be possible to just have it MOT'd, and get the garage to take a look at the brakes? Everything else seems fine with the car.

Your opinions please....

No, I service mine about every 7 or 8 months (goddamn my high monthly milage). But a better response I guess would be "I stick to my service schedule".

My new car warranty is invalid if I don't have it serviced at the set intervals so I've booked it in for its first service at £130. Otherwise I'd service it myself.

Interesting thread. My new focus has done about 2k miles in the past year but is due a service. I'm thinking its pretty pointless and may just get an oil/filter change done instead of a full service. What do people suggest?

No warranty involved, the car is 5 years old nearly. Just barely been used by the previous owner hence a mileage of 23k!

I bought my last two cars as brand new.
The time before my current car - it had a 12,000 mile service interval.
I simply took it in just before I hit the next one.
If that was longer than a year so be it.

My current car has 20,000 mile service intervals and although being on a 54 plate has around 35k on the clock so it has only been in for one service and probably won't get a second until the middle of this year.

I can take the car in for intermediate services at 10,000 (room in the log book to record such visits).
However the car is behaving itself, hasn't missed a beat so I'll save a little money and wait until I reach 40k before taking it in again.

As for doing work on the car myself.
Although I did study to be a car mechanic at college (BTEC National) and do know my way around cars - there are basically 5 points under the hood marked in yellow which are all liquid fill points for various things.
These are the "user service" areas and of course I keep an eye on those.
The rest of it I'm not supposed to touch - I haven't had the need to so for warranty sake I leave alone.

I only do 6-7k per year so have it serviced every year :)

It's only typically ~£100 and keeps it running smoothly and I get told of any faults that I wouldn't have noticed normally.

If you've just bought it - I think its always worth servicing it - Is it due a full service or just normal service?

newer cars are worth the servicing by someone else. once its past a certain point theres a certain something about doing it yourself and getting your hands dirty :)

would suggest that with a S-reg, you look to learn to o it yourself if your keeping the car for any length of time.

cambelt changes etc, get them done properly (mines being done toether with a major service for 600...:(

everytime i have got a new car i have always had it serviced, just to make sure i know where im starting from.

Depends what should be done in the service, if its simply an oil and filter change, then yeah, may as well do it yourself. Just keep all the receipts and staple them into the service book.

Most cars will provide an interval in the owners manual when they need to be serviced example my car requires a service every 9,000 miles or every 12 months which ever comes first. Depending on the car you may have a service light which will probably come on when it needs a service. BMW's however have variable servicing intervals depending on how the car is used.

Dont bother getting it serviced, its a stamp in the book which is worthless to me.

Cant see myself selling my car on, and if i do it will probably be to an enthusiast or broke for parts so doubt a service history will matter, its a 12 year old car. I couldnt care less if it had a brake pad change at 43021 miles or something similar, the last year or twos history and thats it is all i would say bothers me.

Just keep on top of pads/discs/oil/filters and remember to get the belts done.

Got my pricing for new belts and water pump today, £35 for new alternator, cambelt and water pump and a days work, cant see a garage charging under £100 for that, so well worth doing myself. :)

I stick to my Service Schedule... Plus my Local Honda Garage (where I bought the Car!) do Free MOT's if I keep getting it serviced with them!...

I've currently got 2,000ish miles to go before its due!... theres a sticker like the MOT one in my windscreen telling me the milage/Date (which ever comes first!) when its due...
