Are you looking to gain features or just sound quality? If it's just the sound I'd be going down the Vibe micro amp first. It's plug & play so could even return it if not satisfied.

I never knew such a thing existed! Sounds like a great plan.

probably wouldn't buy 2nd hand speakers, but previously bought a 2nd hand (original)alpine on ebay to replace it's predecssor that had done 10 years across 2 cars

Sooooo, anyway. It turns out that despite following various instructions that the wire with the stripe is -VE, it's actually +VE but only for the offside front speaker so, despite my best efforts they were cross wired, sorted now and sounds 100 times better.
