I've often wondered what all the names and acronyms mean on cars. Things like GT I thought was Grand Tourer but then what is GTi? I mean you can't call a Pug 106GTi a Grand Tourer??
Others are:
RS - as in Ford, Porsche and Audi is it Rally Sport?
VRS - Skoda
XR - Ford and Peugeot
TD = Turbo Diesel
RX - Mazda
GL - Many
GLX - Many
ST - Ford

And many more. Anyone help with explanations?

GT = Grand Tourer
GTi = Grand Tourismo (injection)

Yes, subtle difference in name huge difference in meaning.

Don't know about Audi but Ford RS = Rallye Sport.

XR - Ford and Peugeot

For Peugeot at least it's merely a middling trim level with no real meaning.

GL - Many
GLX - Many

These originally came from terms like Luxe, Grand Luxe, etc but eventually evolved into largely meaningless distinctions between models in the same range.

RX - Mazda

Stands for something like Rotary Experimental or there abouts at least.

Please feel free to laught at me if i'm wrong.

O/T Fox: RE: your sig. I thought the RSAP was the stick on tat (your words) or do you infact have neons, a butane flamer kit and Lax Power stickers? ;) :p

RS on the rump of a Porsche would stand for "Rennsport" (=racing), as I presume would be the case for Audis

Any one remember the very first turbo diesel Fiat Tipos that arrived in the UK

The badge on the back read Tipo TurD :p

Fiat UK were not impressed and it was changed before any reached the customers

With BMWs,
Is the last 2 numbers of there names the size of there engine?
Like:
318=1.8L
325=2.5L
330=3.0L

Is this right or did i just get it all wrong?

I think that's how it used to be, but now there's exceptions, e.g. the new 650 being 4.8 litres iirc, and the 535d is actually 3 litres

LOL, never heard that one before :D

The one I always remember is that the MR2 is called the MR in France. Not sure if I'm allowed to swear in French on here so just say MR2 quickly in French ;) :D
