Hi all, I realise this isn't a mechanic's forum but there are a lot of knowledgeable people floating around these boards and I thought I'd give it a shot here first before moving on to anywhere more purpose-built.
I have a '97 VW Polo 1l; just under 94k on the clock and generally good condition for its age.
Recently I've been having a problem whereby whenever I slow down to a stop and, with the clutch pedal fully pressed, the car will stall. Occasionally it will shudder and recover itself and not stall, but 99% of the time it will simply cut out for no good reason.
A friend suggested the engine breather might be blocked (and it was) so I had that cleaned but to no effect; the problem still remains. For some reason, this problem only occurs when the engine is at it maximum normal temperature; it will not occur on a short hop with a cold engine, but after I spend 10 minutes on the motorway it will do it when I hit the suburbs where there is traffic. Someone else suggested something may be dragging the engine to a stop, but I have no idea what that could be, and typing 'engine stalling' into google is hardly productive.
I recently had an exhaust replacement (my old one literally exploded, brilliant pics), and I was wondering if this could in any way be related (but what little I know about cars make me think not)?
Thanks in advance for any advice you may be able to provide.
