Hi guys,

Not sure if this is in the right forum ...

I've noticed that more and more car stereos are offering SD card playback. Most I've seen only handle MP3 format etc. Does anyone know of any that can handle FLAC?

Cheers,

Jed.

I doubt you'll find any. In all honesty with the noise you get in a car it's pointless anyways, you'd be unable to tell the difference.

I'd agree with the above, if your music is in FLAC then just convert the files to mp3.

Failing that what about a sandisk clip and an aux cable?

I'd rather not have the hassle of two seperate libraries ... I've got a Cowan D2 that plays back FLAC and can connect via a 3.5mm jack in my current player. Unfortunately my son managed to snap the jack in the socket. I thought an SD card reading FLAC playing car stereo would tick all my boxes ...

I've played an MP3 CD before and noticed a difference, although it may just have been poorly encoded. I'll have to test it out again.

Just encode at 320kbps or above. You'd be hard pressed to notice the difference when driving.

Do a proper ABX test in the car if you can, no point ABXing on your PC at home in a quiet environment :)

I just read your Car PC thread..... good job..... so much negativity in there though..... pathetic really

Doesnt look like theres too much, seemed an equal number of people saying they liked it as disliked it.

Just because some people have some negative opinions doesnt make it pathetic.

yeah, so the recommended solution is to convert your flac files to mp3 in order to play them on your car stereos

i know a step by step guide on how to convert flac to mp3 on mac or windows at How to Convert FLAC to MP3 on Mac or Windows

hope it helps more or less

I know this is an old thread but there is a head unit that plays flac from usb or sd card - Kenwood KMM-357SD. It's mechless so it's shorter than normal head unit size and it's cheap at about £70ish.
The Kenwood KMM-257 is cheaper (£40ish)but doesn't have the sd card reader bit (usb only)and has less illumination options.

I'm looking into this myself so I figured it might help others who find this thread via google search for 'car audio flac player' or similar.
