I have an older defender (1988) and i want to replace the stereo with one that has android auto and a 6 or 7" display. either fold out or floating.

anyone recommend and branded options. there seem to be a lot of unbranded ones on rainforest, but i want to avoid them if possible.

Going back to my boy racer days the fold out screen ones that sempt the most feature rich were Kenwood followed by Alpine. Halfords look to still stock a decent amount online.

I have a similar issue on my newly purchased Z4 Coupe wanting Android auto but realistically only have a single din to play with

Not wanting a no brand unit the only option I can see realistically is the Pioneer AVH-Z7200DAB

With its foldy out screen. But quite pricey

They do phone holding android auto unit but a see little point in it

Other options would permanently block or restrict vents.

Unless you can find one very discounted, best to just use a phone in a holder. Much less hasstle tbh. I found a double din one for my daily with a damaged box (70% off) and fit it myself for £200 all in. I wanted it mostly for DAB+ and it just happened to be massively discounted.

A few annoying issues with aftermarket units. Alternator whine (which can be hard to get rid of!), all kinds of compatibility issues etc you need to work out. For satnav etc a phone just works better than anything else.

Got the predecessor to this. Does the job. Dont really use any of the features on the actual radio other than just a screen for android auto. Does the job though. Being able to fold the screen away does mean you can have a nicer stealth OEM look.

Yer thats my plan too, hopefully its far better on the audio quality than the stock bmw e85/e86 head unit

A lot will also depend on the quality of the speakers you have. I still have the standard renault ones, but have a Kenwood underseat sub and it works well as a setup. I mean half the time its on, its playing Gabbys Dollhouse The Movie Soundtrack or Disney songs but hey ho

i cannot tell you how rubbish the android auto crap single din stuff is on amazon. it's all pure junk.

however

DUDUAUTO DUDU 7

i cannot recommend this enough. it's what i now have in my van, and it's the best in vehicle system i've ever had or seen, and i'm comparing this to friends vehicles who have brand new porchse, land rover etc.

you will never use android auto once install this as it's far superior, given that the device is essentially an android tablet. it plays netflix, music apps, youtube, maps etc. i can listen to a song on my phone, jump in the van and it's there for me to listen to thanks to youtube music. now my phone is free while the device does everything i need and more.
