I currently have a 59 plate Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart GS with 60k miles on the clock. Pretty much standard apart from 1k's worth of stereo, amp, speakers and sub. In very good condition. Problem is money is a bit tight at the moment and it costs quite a bit to run so am toying with the idea of swapping it.

I'm looking for something a lot more sensible in terms of tax and fuel costs that I can buy with the proceeds from my car without being out of pocket. Would love something to have performance that comes close. Any suggestions? Preferably something which doesn't look generic but think the options are quite limited.

What do you value your Evo at? Would be easier to come up with a list of potentials if there was a firm budget.

If money is tight, are you looking to keep any lump sum from the sale?

After you sell it, and taking in consideration the cost of your Ice install, will you really be saving any money?

How much do you spend a month in fuel, tax and insurance currently?

Don't see the point Op if your still wanting something with decent performance any car like that will still hit you with bigger bills than your average car.
If you were downgrading to say a run of the mill Mondeo or Octavia etc to save money then yeh but to still want a car with performance is pointless just keep what you have if it's been reliable

Ah, it's not an Evolution, in which case I can't see the running costs being massively different to anything else with similar running costs, so it's likely a pointless exercise, that at best will save you a few hundred £ a year, and at worst could see you into an unreliable car that ends up costing you far more.

It's still a 240bhp 2.0, returning 27mpg book figure, so probably less in the real world too. £520 yearly tax bill too.

There's probably a few things around the £3000, £4000 range that would still be pokey enough but without those sort of economy and tax figures. As you say though, new car brings potential new problems to spend money fixing.

Though looking at parkers did highlight that their used values top out at £6000, so hoping for 6 to 7 for it might be a touch hopeful.

It's 500 quid a year on tax. Awful mpg, average around 23 I think. Have to use the more expensive petrol and get around 220 miles out of a 50 quid tank of petrol. Think insurance is around 330. It is very reliable and in good knick so it is a tough decision, i don't particularly want to sell it but thought it might be a sensible decision. I think I'm prepared to take a hit on performance.

Don't let mpg cloud things too much unless you're doing lots of miles - the difference between running a 23mpg and 30mpg car will be minimal. Certainly not worth the risk of change.

I know it all adds up, but changing for a car with equivalent performance for similar money rarely works out particularly benefitial in terms of cost.

Yeah I have come to terms with that fact the only way this makes sense is if I downgrade to a sensible diesel or something.

Even then you have to pick wisely or the running cost savings could be obliterated by a clutch / fly / DPF or the likes.

Saying that something like a diesel Accord that has either recently had a clutch or has the newer part fitted would have a certain appeal for me.
