Allo,

I'm trying to tax a car, but not having much joy..

The tax ran out at the beginning of June. Then I realised that the MOT was up, which it subsequently failed. I got around to sorting it out last week, MOT'd the car, and figured I'd wait for a few days so that I could tax it from the beginning of July (the car has been garaged, but not SORN'd), and not lose a month of tax for the sake of a few days..

Anyway, I don't seem to be able to do that online. It's insisting the car be taxed from the beginning of June, I'm not inclined to do that :D. So, I popped into the post office. They weren't particularly helpful, and stated that they too would be unable to tax the car unless it were from the first of June.

Is that correct?, and there's no way around this?. Any help appreciated.

^As above, you can't just skip a month if you haven't been driving it, it must be legally SORN'd for June if you want to skip paying that month, if you haven't done that you'll need to pay for 13 months tax (if you're doing it for a year) to cover June aswell.

It happened to me once a few years back and I was walking to work instead of driving and I completely forgot. If they won't let you back tax it at the at the post office because it's too late, you can go in person to your local DVLA office and do it there before they send you a letter chasing you up about it.

Okies, not a problem. Thanks for clearing that up.

You didnt pay your tax for June, so obviously it's going to be back dated.

Tis true. Though I could argue that I haven't driven the car during that period, expended any carbon/emissions, etc. Nor have I made use of any service provided for by the tax revenue generated by my paying Excise Duty for the vehicle; nor used any of those services as a result of my not paying Excise Duty for the period..

But, it seems like a rather murky subject, and I don't really know much about it. So there we go.

Anyway, in the end (mid typing this post out) the DVLA website did actualy allow me to tax the vehicle from the first of this month.. Using the V5 details etc, rather than the reminder. So we shall see what comes of that :D. I'll gamble £80 to find out.

Not murky at all, it needs to be taxed and insured constantly or declared SORN. If you couldn't use it you should have SORN'ed it. You have side stepped it by using your V5 now but don't be surprised if you get a fine for leaving it a month.

I wasn't disputing the legality, rather the rationale behind the Vehicle Excise legislation. The notion of having to SORN a vehicle, against threat of prosecution (I have SORN'd several. Again, I'm not disputing there being a legal requirement) seems pretty odd/unnecessary.

Regarding the fine. As I said, I'm happy to gamble the £80. I'm not overly fussed about losing a month (the car's being sold in any case), I'm more apposed to the idea of having to adhere to what seems like a rather silly/arbitrary rule.

I went to the local DVLA office in person and was nice to them and even though by the time I visited them it was more than 4 weeks after the original expiry date they didn't fine me, just charged me the extra month that I missed :)
