Hi there,

A friend unfortunately got his car stolen and asked me to try and source a tracking device that does not require a monthly/annual subscription.

I dont really know much about cars as you can gather from previous posts but do know everytime I have posted on here you guys have been remarkably good.

So Im back, can anyone help?

Please advise

Thanks in advance

There are many SMS/GSM/GPS based trackers you can buy, Meta used to sell one as well.

I am interested in peoples suggestions/experiences as well as I am thinking about getting one for my Scooby.

They require a PAYG sim card are respond to an sms with vehicle GPS co-ordinates you can lookup on google maps etc.

that's the sort of thing

mine is £11.50 and it was required when I was covered by swiftcover, now I've moved to sky insurance I no longer need it, but I'm keeping the monthly payments going because I have three CD's which are impossible to replace if someone nicks my car :p

Barry from Safe n Sound? Do a bit of googling then try and contact him, good luck getting a reply. I wanted an Ai606 with the Toad Text module and a few others coming in at circa £450 so you'd think he'd be interested especially as I was offering to bring the car to him. Wrong.

He couldn't even manage to reply to an email, ebay message or text/voicemail since the 22nd of October. He also has an issue with after-sales service according to at least one scooby owner and if he's this hard to get a reply from when you want to give him money I can quite believe you've got no chance after he's got it.

Also the remote start invalidates your Thatcham approval.

You can get 'cheap' GPS/GSM trackers from the likes of ebay that are subscription free but again you'll get nothing off your insurance (it may even be classed as a modification), would an old nokia and one of the many phone locate services not be suitable for your friend? Depending on network they reckon they're accurate to within 100m on Vodafone (location dependant obviously)

Bledd you're right, everyone who's had an install done by him comments on how nice a bloke he is and what a good job he does, that's why I wanted him to do the install, the small number of people who complain tend to be the ones who try and contact him afterwards.

Either way busy or not it'll be 3 weeks this Saturday since I asked for a confirmed price and lead time. I could have-course understand him having computer issues hence the follow up call/text or perhaps he lost his phone but both for approaching 3 weeks? I ended up asking Ian aka Mr_Toad from mobilecaralarms.com who frequents many of the same forums and has similar feedback for a price, he got back to me the same day with a price and is based in the same area so it looks like he'll be getting the business.

As it turns out the repair agent who has my car is still waiting for the new hard top and it needs blast proof window films before the alarm gets done so i'm stuck for a while longer.

Oh and for the OP the Datatool Snitcher is a bike product that would easily fit in a car as would the Toad Text system but both require you to top up on the PAYG sim inside so you may be better off going with an old Nokia and text locate, it'll be initially cheaper, the batteries are easy to get hold of and it's easy to find a perm/switched live to splice a charger in covertly, even when the car battery is removed you have a week or so on the phone's battery, it'll also get a signal in places where a tracker is less likely to eg a container or underground parking.
