Hi

Need some advice guys, missus car breaks down, it was pouring down that day and there were a lot of puddles on the road. She was driving and the steering wheel went heavy, car lost power and conked out. I went to help and after 30 mins of waiting I manage to get the car into the driveway and it conked out again. After that it would turn over but not start.

The engine light came on Amber, the AA appeared when I was out and the guy reset the error code using some hand held device, he reported 'crank shaft sensor error' and cleared it, I have since driven the car 100 miles with no problems, should I take it to the garage to get checked over? What did he use to reset it? I could do with one of them, car is a Chevrolet Aveo.

Thanks

Sounds like water just got into the crank shaft sensor connector.

If it's still under warranty, ask them to check the condition of the connector and it's sealing at the next service.

If it's not under warranty, just pop off the connector, squirt it with some wd 40, reassemble and should be good.

Thanks mate, It's not under warranty so I'll have a look on a dry day.

Crank sensors can be an absolute pain - as above, clean it and stick it back in.
Best to get it sorted as conking out on a contraflow m62 uphill is not the easiest of situations to deal with...but that's a different story! :D

Scary stuff :D

I'm going to get one of those ODB2 scanners so I can reset it should it happen again, plus get it sorted

Yeah that for me was the lifesaver, if I didn't have that there would have been tailbacks for miles and waiting around for the AA to turn up.

I just stuck on my hazards, reset everything using the Torque app, said a little prayer and turned the key - thankfully it fired up and all was well until we got to our destination. People behind were confused though!

I keep meaning to ask and this has prompted me to ask again. I have an obd2 bluetooth scanner, but have switched back to an iPhone since I last had need for it. Which app do people use on iPhone to replace torque app for android?

Dashcommand is probably your best bet but you'll probably need a wifi reader instead due to the Bluetooth limitations on ios

Email me your address, I'll send you my wifi one - I've just switched back to android so it's no good to me, you need to root Android for torque to work with WiFi which I'm not going to do, so you're welcome to it

Sorry to go slightly off topic here, but does anyone have a recommendation for a cheap obd2 Bluetooth connector? I've moved house recently and lost mine.

I ordered one from Amazon. I have thankfully never had that experience, a breakdown in a heavy traffic area

Where I live there are no real AA breakdown vehicles, all local garages they send out. In fact don't think I've seen a proper AA vehicle until I hit Edinburgh :D
