Went to go out and car wouldn't start, was trying to, making a whirring kind of noise but nothing.

Kept trying and it fired up and then died, tried again and it started ok and ran ok for about 5 minutes, turned engine off and retried and it started ok.

Was cold here last night so I'm guessing the battery is knackered? No error codes have shown, I believe it's the original battery. Car is a 2007 clio.

Had this recently, turned out to be a coolant temp sensor. The eml reported that though, the light went on and off intermittently too.

No error codes shown up. Have you plugged it in and read them?
As said before crank sensors are very common on Clio's but this normally shows up a fault.
