Hey chaps,

A friend of mine kindly sent me his unused ASUS 7950 as my card was becoming a little sluggish while playing ArcheAge.

The issue is, it doesn't seem to work. I got it installed and the fans are spinning, but all I am getting is a black screen. When loaded into Windows using onboard graphics, the 7950 is not showing up in the Device Manager and attempts to detect the card by installing the AMD Catalyst Control Centre failed to detect it as well.

Things I have tried:

Reseating the card
Disabling the onboard graphics adapter through Device Manager
Ensuring that PCIE/PCI is the #1 priority in the BIOS
Reseating the card again
Checking all power cables are firmly attached
Resetting CMOS

Etc, etc... The usual stuff.

My PSU is "Antec TruePower New Modular 550W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply"

I use teamviewer as a troubleshoting tool for video issues.

It's free and highly accredited, install that onto your PC and setup access from your tablet/phone. Then when you boot with the 7950 and you get a black screen, you can log in with teamviewer and see if your system is actually booting into Windows then check if it's recognised the graphics card. You can even reinstall the latest drivers, and attempt to roll back drivers to see if it makes a difference.

Windows 8 could also cause an issue (drivers aren't all fully supported).
Try pressing the Win+P keys to switch display modes.
Try connecting to the other display ports, i.e. HDMI to your TV.

^^ Very good point!

My 290 worked fine before but for some reason it stopped displaying over DVI and would only work on HDMI. Similar to you, I reinstalled windows, tried different drivers and to no effect.

What worked for me was the cable, do you have another cable you can try? Also I know you've mentioned Device Manager doesn't detect it, but have you scanned for hardware changes once in Windows?

Have you tried the card in the other slot ?

Check the cable. Is it a DVI-D or DVI-I? Single link or dual link?

I know it shouldn't make a difference, but I had a similar problem with an R9 280 and it turned out to be the cable, which was DVI-D (single link) and worked fine with other graphics cards.

Swapped it for a dual link DVI-I and it worked fine.
