Guys,

Looking for some guidance.

I have been holding off getting a new rig since x/mas - I was waiting to see
the bechmarks of r600 against 8800gtx (In Febuary...haha).

I eventually ordered everything else and have a nice shiny e6600 rig with a
borrowed 7600gt (stolen from my mums new pc) myt old 850xt was AGP :(

Now with the release of the r600 looking to be on the slide I have the
following options.

1.Wait on the r600 and leave my mum with onboard.

2.Get a GTX now (but I am nervous of a price drop once the r600 and 8900
comes out)

3.Get a GTS now and pocket £150.00

4.Leave it till March and see what the 8900 is like. ( But I fear this will be
moved back to coincide with the r600's launch.

Currently gaming on a 19"crt but will be upgrading to a 24" tft later in the
year.

So what would you do in my position

If you really want a 24" then the GTX or something of a similar power would be needed. The GTS would start to struggle at that res once newer, fancier games come out. If you decided on a 22" instead you could just use a GTS which would save you a lot of money!

If i were you i'd hold out! On a 19" monitor a 7600 will cope very well and if your mum can put up with onboard graphics it would be the most sensible thing to do!

Lots of waiting there to be honest. You have a nice rig but without any proper GPU power. I wouldn't be waiting for a company to release something with a nice system like that - its holding you back. If you keep on waiting you might be disappointed.

It might be worth the while getting the GTS so that if the new batch of ATI cards are better than nVidia's then you can possibly move to them if you decide that.

This would be a nice contender - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-036-BG&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=877

Get a 320mb eVGA card and then you can use the step up program to get a 8800/8900GTX/R600 (if eVGA seel ATi at all) when one comes out (within 90 days of purchase) and only pay the difference in retail price....

Yup,

The step-up seems a good idea but also seems a lot of hassle and the cards
do seem more expensive.

If I get a GTS - might not be able to power the 24" i am looking to buy later.
If I get a GTX - I am buying 5 month old Hardware as such.

So

I think I will sit it out and get whats released 1st between the 8900 or r600

eVGA are a little more expensive but i got a stock 8800GTS from another retailer for the same price as a BFG one on here.

The price drop is the same thing I'm worried about. So I've decided not to get the 8800 yet...

I'm doing number 4, so obviously would recommend others to do the same - otherwise I wouldn't be doing it meself :p I was thinking the same thign about it being moved back with the R600. Hopefully they won't do that.
