Card dying

Hi all,
Sorry for another "what card" thread.

I'm having a few issues with my current card, a Radeon x850xt PE.
Up until about 2 months ago all was fine, and then i started having
a major lag issue when playing games such as COD4.
I put the fps meter on and i noticed that normally it runs at a steady
90 fps but then intermittently it drops about 60 frames down to about
30.
I know that there have been some issues with the airstrikes in COD4
causing such lag, but this just seems to happen to me randomly and not only
with airstrikes and helis.

I normally run the game at 1152x864 so i dropped the res to 1024x768
and took off things such as AA and this has made it marginally better.

So to me its looking like my card is on its way out.

Problem i have is that i have no idea of what card i can replace it with.
I have had a look online and i can see plenty of 2nd hand cards but i would prefer
not to go down this route, and i have no idea if any of the current
cards will work in my system.

Can anyone advise of what cards i could get to replace this one and
give me good peformance in the likes of COD4 ?

specs that may be needed:

Dell XPS Gen4
Pentium 4 3.2 ghz
2 gb ddr2 ram
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3
19 inch Hyundai Imagequest crt monitor
Max res i play games at 1152x864 and never really run high settings
as you will see from the image attached.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Well i am hoping to get a new system in the next few months
so i dont want to spend to much, i'd like to spend about £50
as i this wont be used that much soon, but i'm guessing about
£100 is more realistic ?

This is where i am runing into problems, i know that this card was pretty high end when i got it, but how good it is in relation to cards nowadays i have no idea.
ie would a cheap card nowadays give me the same performance as this one?

I play cod4 and I have the 8800gt at the moment and I run @ 125fps constant (I have set the max fps in game) I am selling that card on OCUK for sale area and am now looking at a new one.

hence my thread: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17991907

You only have 2 posts so im guessing you dont have the for sale area but if you would like a look at the 8800gt I have for sale then e-mail me in trust.

dP

EDIT: Also what is your current spec?

As i said above i would prefer not to go down the 2nd hand card route
unless i really need to.
Anyone got any pointers on this subject ?

Second hand 8800 GT for that price (like said above), would cut through COD4 at that res with considerable ease, but if you would rather buy new, and its only to last a few months till you get a new system, then id say the 4670 is worth a look, slightly over budget, but at that res i would it think it would easily handle COD4, its quite a bit slower than the 8800 GT though, but either way, both would be a mammoth boost over an x850. :)

Thanks for that, had a quick look at the 4670 and the price doesnt seem to bad at all.
My system is PCIE but i noticed that the 4670 is PCIE 2.
I assume that this card will work ok, but maybe not be able to run to its
full extent because my mobo is not PCIE 2 ?

I will contact daniel to see how much this card is out of interest, as i
cant see any "for sale" forum.

4670 is good value for a new card, surprisingly good performance across a broad range of games. Well matched to your current setup too. Avoid versions offering extra memory like 1gb though, normally slower and results in worse performance. Also, not worth dropping down to 4650 - slight price saving, big performance drop.

Firstly I apologise for asking a question in someone’s thread but it is marginally related..

Can cards actually die slowly???????

I’d rather my old card worked or did not!

Only asking as my four year old 6800GT card seems to now not handle BF2 PR(Mod) played for years but not played it in months as I’m concerned it will blow my Card. I started getting that it would just crash and black screen after so long on the game….I had this a month into the card and the shop replaced the PSU and that stopped it. So it might be my PSU is not up to the task. Also cleaned the card that was thick with dust....

I’m selling the PC on in the next few months to a friend that has no interest in games and just wants another machine to browse the net and Email etc. So I’d rather not push the system….Game wise its NavyFeilds that online battle game…..cant even Buy MY FM09 game and gave up on Clan nights as the PC was on 100%CPU for hours and hours.

Can cards die slowly ?

Yes they can , usually starts with failing/crashing in high end games
then starts failing when just playing video files
then crashes / locks up during standard 2d desktop
then when PC is powered on starts artifacting at bios screen

All of the above happened to my 8800gtx over the period of about 1 week
Then it died completely

Have to say my card done it twice over a few weeks on PR…..It was full of dust and I took it out and it was cleaned and put back in……Its been stable since and that was months ago. But I Don’t want to push it again with PR……….As I hope to sell it on. My mate has my old system that is now seven years old and still works like a charm.

I’m hoping it was just the dust over heating it……….and its shut off cutting in.
