I have an old 9700 Pro All in Wonder in my old system and its recently started displaying artifacts on the screen (vertical lines, dashes etc).

It doesn't just happen within Windows, also during load and in BIOS screen which suggests the card itself is on the way out??

Also, it works ok for a little while from cold boot, but then the display starts turns to garbage - does that suggest a heat problem?

Am I just best giving up with the card (it's lasted me so long - cost over £300 when new  :o) and grabbing something else as a replacement?

Cheers

Yes and sorry it sounds like the card has pumped it last pixel and it's time treat yourself to a new graphics card.

But, if it was heat problem what has changed in your system that would be causing it? You said you had the card a long time and running OK I assume. So to be a heat problem something should have gone noticeably wrong with your system. Like the fan dying in your Power Supply, or the fan on the 9700 pro if it uses one. Been so long I don't remember anymore.

He meant its been so long since he used/seen a 9700pro that he can't remember if was passively cooled or not, and as far as I remember only Saphire sold a (uber expensive) passively cooled 9700pro which utilised a Zalman 80A-HP heatsink.

Yes its got a fan which is still working, and I've had no problems with it till now.

Ah well, new card time :D
