Card for Nvidia Physix

They wern't using other cards for the physx, they just benched them with the PhysX turned off, then benched them again with it turned on, and with the PhsyX on, the 275 plummeted about 30 frames, and the 285 lost about 24, which isn't supposed to happen i thought.

Of course it's going to happen; if you increase the load on the card, the framerate will go down (unless you are cpu limited, obviously).

A discrete PhysX card should be faster than a single card solution, providing it is powerful enough (something of GTS320/9600GT power and above).

That said I still don't think it is worth the expense of buying another card specifically to run PhysX in general. By far a better option would be to go with an SLI setup as that will benefit a much wider range of games, you're getting extra power to use all the time, not extra power that can only be used in PhysX titles. Heck I have a GTS320 sat around doing nothing but I haven't even bothered plugging it in for PhysX as my motherboard can't run both slots in 16x mode.

Obviously where the OP is concerned SLI isn't an option, in which case upgrading to a single powerful card is likely the best choice.
 
Bare in mind that with hardware physics enabled you also get more complex graphics effects often so some of the fps drop is from rendering that... also while the GPU can do some physics processing without a rendering hit - the more complex teh physics in teh game the bigger the more its going to overlap into rendering time.

That said in mirrors edge on a 200 series card the difference in performance shouldn't be huge... on my 260GTX SLI running max settings @ 2048x with physx on theres hardly any drop in performance as even with quite high SLI scaling gains the cards still have quite a bit of slack as SLI rarely loads up both cards to 100%.
 
Well if my bro wants a new gfx card ill just buy his 9600gt off him when he does instead.

Btw Would my pcie x16 slot slow to 8x if i added another pcie card for physx?
