I just replaced my dead MSI m/b with the Asrock 785G

It has integrated Radeon HD4200 graphics, would this be faster than my X1900XTX ?

I know the 4200 is newer, but with it being integrated i'm not sure ?

I'm not much of a gamer at the mo, but i still want to get the most out of this ageing rig :)

Thanks :D

Integrated graphics are never going to set the world alight. I have a slimline PC from a certain brand with integrated graphics. Under Windows 7 it rated 4.1 and 3.5 for Graphics/Games Graphics. Just adding a lowly ATI HD5570 bumped that to 6.8/6.8!

Onboard graphics is just about good enough to play hd video in a best case scenario.
It has to steal RAM from the system for a start, and is never good for games.

as mentioned it take up your memory so i would just find a good second had card for around £30 or even less.

i always look for boards with out a card built on

dont worry about scores on windows they mean nothing. my harddive was 5.9 so i raided it with another and it is fast and its still 5.9 some ssd drives are at 5.9 so dont worry

I would usually look for a board without integrated video, but getting a new socket 939 board doesn't have many options now, so had to make do.... although i've no complaints, it's working like a champ :D It does the job anyway :)

Got the card installed with latest Omega drivers and the whole system is flying, can't beat a clean install :)

Cheers :)

I tested my old x1950xt v's a 4650 and they where about even. Some boards come with on-board ram for graphics cards (sideport memory) but are still handed there arses by discrete cards.

The discrete card is almost always the better choice, quite plainly. The 1900 range are solid cards and will serve you well, despite the newer make of the alternative, the downsides of integrated solutions are just too much. Furthermore, the generational difference between the two isn't even that great to even things out in favour of the integrated one.

One thing i like, the board came with instant boot software and windows loads in 4 seconds :).... never seen it before, but well impressed :)
