Was going to order my second Gigabyte 280x Windforce last night, but thought I'd wait to see if things dropped later this week from £282. Its now £299!

Blame the bitcoin mining craze, AMD prices are going up and down a lot recently due to this.

Yeah its shocking! the GPU i got is still the same price nearly a year on... Only my one though so **** choice if wanting to go crossfire lol

Pffft AMD are no better than nVidia for pricing :D

On a serious note though, price gouging is to be expected with supply and demand and I am finding myself staying out of the "What GPU for me with a £250 budget" threads, as both AMD and nVidia are too high for my liking in recommendations.

It was always easy with the 7950 at less than £200 but no idea now.

I was going to grab a new 280x to replace my SLI 460's this week but I just cant pull the trigger as I honestly don't think the jump in performance will be that great given the high prices of AMD cards at the moment

Like everything, there are deals out there if you shop around.

I don't think there is a shortage everyone has stock of at least 2 or 3 brands of 290 and am guessing the manufacturers are rushing to get theirs 290s out ASAP. A lot of places don't list them until they come in stock and have limited knowledge so just stick them up at rrp or their usual margins.

Purchased several cards from here as well as psu recently and used shop for many years.

Had another one of the OCuk 280x Saphhires in basket and was going to buy this week. Sure it has went up by £10 since yesterday.

So just looked around and got same card with free delivery a lot, cheaper.

Not sure if your baiting or not but as far as i'm aware and said this before. AMD do not set the end prices for their cards only the release prices/base price which can be seen with such as the 290 and 290x. The vendors and retailers set the end price and that has risen recently because of them. So if the demand is high like at the moment with little supply, the retailers will increase prices due to running out of supply of the cards and not being able to sell anymore for few weeks until more stock arrives.

As far as im aware AMD and Nvidia set a base price for their cards which you normally see with the reference cards then the vendors normally create their own pcb add their own coolers then add the chips (speed binned or not) then set their price which increases the prices over reference. After this point AMD don't really control the end price only the vendors and retailers do and its this point where the prices have currently increased. So once again correct me if im wrong but AMD have nothing to do with the price increase

And Nvidia are renown for setting a higher base price for their cards vs AMD which can clearly be seen from reference cards.

It is a bit of a running joke on here, normally it is AMD users having a go at Nvidia pricing and saner voices saying everything you just said about the manf not setting the price, blame the vendors :D
It seems to have come full circle

Are people stupid ? a 280x is more or less a 7970 right or 2x 6950's/70's

I don't get it you'll be lucky to make £5 a day from 24/7 bitcoin mining these days after electricity costs.

These noobs thinking they going to make a fortune lol I suspect there are going to be a lot of angry parents around with these electricity bills.

I just hope tax payer funded colleges and uni's get made to pay for all the extra electricity being used or better yet the people abusing it charged for it.

Should be against the law to bitcoin mine in uni's colleges etc I hope there are investigations in to it all and people who made a fortune get made to pay it back if it's done on tax payers electricity.
