Card prices going up???

Not sure if your baiting or not but as far as i'm aware and said this before. AMD do not set the end prices for their cards only the release prices/base price which can be seen with such as the 290 and 290x. The vendors and retailers set the end price and that has risen recently because of them. So if the demand is high like at the moment with little supply, the retailers will increase prices due to running out of supply of the cards and not being able to sell anymore for few weeks until more stock arrives.

As far as im aware AMD and Nvidia set a base price for their cards which you normally see with the reference cards then the vendors normally create their own pcb add their own coolers then add the chips (speed binned or not) then set their price which increases the prices over reference. After this point AMD don't really control the end price only the vendors and retailers do and its this point where the prices have currently increased. So once again correct me if im wrong but AMD have nothing to do with the price increase

And Nvidia are renown for setting a higher base price for their cards vs AMD which can clearly be seen from reference cards.

Did you just read the first line and post your response? I clearly say that price gouging is to be expected (price gouging infers that the retailer is cashing in on demand - not AMD or nVidia) and if I was in the retail business and had stock, I would probably do the same.

I have had many a debate about retail prices and pulled up MRP's to prove a point about gouging. If you read further into my post, I said it was easy to recommend a 7950 at the sub £200 price, as there was nothing from nVidia to counter.

But while you are attempting to pull me up, I will show you ;)

The MRP of the 680 on launch was $500
The MRP of the 7970 on launch was $550
The launch price of the 670 was $400
The Launch price of the 7950 was $450

Whilst I am inclined to agree with you on the 290X against the 780Ti and 290 Vs the 780, AMD certainly were not the good guys on that release. Anyways, don't confuse my jocular manner for baiting and it was said with humour (hence the lol face)

Any ideas if Nvidia prices will reduce ?

Depends the area you are looking for.

Many custom GTX780 OC and GTX780Ti OC are sold 10-15% less for what they were early December. If you have ~£550 atm you can find quite a few GTX780Ti with custom coolers and maybe factory overclock, while at ~£350 you can get some pretty good GTX780.

However these are the only cards worth buying from Nvidia as value for money goes.

280X is better value for money than the GTX770 and the 760, even at current price levels.

And because anyone can say what they like without first hand experience, my money went back in November to an amazing GTX780 (PNY XLR8 OC) and haven't looked back. Two months of pure awesomeness. Even the damn Total War Rome 2 runs absolutely superbly with everything maxed out. And I was coming from two heavily overclocked 7950 which sold at 60% more than bought them for. (and had sold their games also!!!)

got a 7950 for £156 posted a couple of weeks before the mining craze took off, now you'd be lucky to get one for under 200 from the same place

Yeah. Got my 2 Powercolor 7950 PCS+ for £160 each back in September. Sold the games for £60 (in total both the vouchers) and then in late November sold the cards for £200 per pop.

Like everything, there are deals out there if you shop around.

I don't think there is a shortage everyone has stock of at least 2 or 3 brands of 290 and am guessing the manufacturers are rushing to get theirs 290s out ASAP. A lot of places don't list them until they come in stock and have limited knowledge so just stick them up at rrp or their usual margins.

If there is no shortage how come my backorders for over 5000 cards are still yet to arrive. There is a shortage and it's very real, infact there are two shortages.

GPU's are short but only a little, the real issue is there is quite a severe shortage on GDDR5 memory. :(

If I had 5000 280's in stock every card would be over £50 cheaper and we'd be hammering them out, problem is my backlog of 5000 cards is arriving at like 500 cards per week, with current demand we could sell 500 in a few hours.

We are pushing very hard to get stock arriving sooner in larger quantities, there is nothing we like more than doing great deals.

That is why when I did the MSI 280X deal at £220 Inc I said clearly we were silly to do so as they would have still sold at £280 but we wanted to give our customers a great gaming card at a great price on XMAS day. :)

Mining is a big craze, I am building myself a PC with three 290X in it just for gaming and mining, the machine will earn me nearly a litecoin every 1-2 days.

Appreciate your honesty. I've been a loyal customer of OC for donkeys years and have no plans to go elsewhere for my second card. Instead I'll either wait or bite the bullet, but I'd rather have your customer service incase I ever have a problem.

Not that silly as a quick google sees these available for under £230 from a couple of places. Maybe they are getting your stock?
