card reader problems

Im here in the Philippines and go home end of month so not long to fix the problem!

pc is a prebuilt acer aspire running xp sp3.
the card reader sometimes works then sometimes doesnt.
any ideas why

i have looked but cant see anything loose, the pc has sat on desk top and hasnt moved in months. the owner said its been doing this for a while, i thought maybe updating drivers? it worked for me once then next day wont work at all
