Hi

time to plunder some knowledge here. I'm planning to get back into pc gaming as I keep hearing how much better it is than the xbox. To do this i'm going to need to buy a new gfx card or cards as I sold my 4890 prematurely and am currently using a 7950gt :o

I like to play games like GOW, COD, RE, Star Trek legacy and will at some point be acquiring a shiny new tft to use at 1920 x 1200 with most if not all the bells and whistles on with my i7 920 set up.

Basically i'm a tight northerner so want to know whatever I buy i've got a good deal on. Based on this i'm not touching 5850 or 70 unless they can be had for under £180 or £280 respectively, which is unlikely any time this side of judgement day.

What can people recommend? What do you have? Budget is largely irrelevant as long as it's a good deal.

im only using a GF9800 and run games 1920x1200 like GTa4, Crysis, Cod WAW not tried MW2 yet but it runs ok no idea on the fps but it works so thats all that counts. If you want a Dx11 card thou you will need to get a ATI.

Im running a 4870x2 and i can run MW2 perfectly at 1920x1200. If anything it plays better then CoD4. It can play WoW at a constant 60FPS stays steady in citys aswell. I dont play that many other games but im pretty confident that it can play anything thats thrown at it without slowing down to much. GTA4 plays well also.

Iv just gone the crossfire route of getting one 5770 now and one later, although to be fair, if you can pick up a gtx260 216sp for the same price (around 120 odd) then thats just as viable an alternative, has cuda and physx but no dx10.1 or dx11. what tipped it for me is the ease of having the core at 1ghz and the much lower idle wattage, all up to you tho, their both good cards.
I wouldn't worry about the nvidia card not having dx11, games taking advantage of that wont be our for a few months really ( reminds me of teh physx games supported lol), if you dont upgrade cards much then i suppose the ati has more future-proof tech in it. have a good read up on lots of review sites and pick one that you think suits you best, above is just a few ramblings thats went through my mind when deciding on a new card, make sure to check multiple reviews, finding a non biased review site is getting harder by the day :(

You sold the 4890? Well really the only better cards than that are the 5850 and the 5870. 5770 is slightly worse but has more features.

Yup, never played a single game on it. Naively thought the 58xx would settle in price by xmas and wanted to sell the 4890 while prices were high. Stupid really - used 4890 fetching as much if not more than what I paid for mine new.

2x 5770's. I'm running two of them at 1920x1200, and seem to be fine in modern stuff such as COD6:MWF2.

Thanks, useful info - has does it 'feel' - nice and smooth even when lots of action?

MW2 and batman both run fine here on a GTX260 at 1920x1200

Thanks, I'd pretty much overlooked the 260 216.

I'm tempted to try the 5770 route as opposed to the 260 based mostly on power useage. Did you try one on it's own? I'm tempted to try one now while i'm stuck at 1600 x 1200 and then by the time my monitor arrives either add another or flog it and buy the then hopefully cheap as chips and plentiful fermi / hd5970 / xfire 5850.

Any card from a 1gb 4000 ATI or 8000 nvidia equivalent. It's only when people want all settings, including 8xAA, on 'all' games that requires beefier set-ups.

A 5770.

GT200s and 4800s aren't worth looking at any more, old tech for high prices.

5770s are all the rage now and are pretty powerful for their price really.

At the end of this year and the start of next, they should be down on price too when TSMC sort their issues out.

A sexond hand GTX260 for £80 - £90 is a decent buy.

This is my dilemma exactly Kylew, to do my pc / needs justice I think I'll need twin 5850's or equivalent with the low idle power that these new 40nm cards provide. But i'm not lining everyone's pockets by buying them whilst the price is artificially or otherwise inflated like it is now.

A used 260 216 it seems would do to see me through to when the price reflects the product as opposed to the market, so would a 5770 for that matter. I'm cautious though that the 5770 is overpriced at them moment too and will likely see a fall to around the £100 mark once supply issues are resolved, so buying one as a stop gap to sell on would likely mean a hit of around £45. Doing the same with a used 260 would probably entail a loss of around half this.

I'm aware we're not talking big bucks, but i'm a firm believer in value for money, especially mine!

oh and:

5870 runs just dandy at 1900x1200

Thanks for the enlightened input, read the OP! :p

im running a single 5770 at the moment, runs all games iv got nice and smooth, modern warfare 2 at highest settings with 4xAA gives 60fps constantly, crysis runs around 36-56fps on all high settings etc etc, overall im very happy with the performance for the money so far, the same could be said for the 260 tho as well, if you want to upgrade next year when everything has settled down with mature drivers/new DX11 range out then the 260 is also a great buy as well. all a matter of personal choice for ya :)
