ok guys, I am taking advantage of the deals on at the moment here and going for a Q9550, probably OC it to 3400 with any luck...

I currently have a 8800GTS 512 and I am wondering what I should replace that with out of the current 260 and 4890 deals at the moment..

I know that either will be a performance increase but I am also bothered about noise, my GTS is almost silent and I would like the same from the next one.

Running Vista 64, 8GB ram on a Gigabyte GA-965P-S3

I am not looking to upgrade the mobo at the moment.

Thanks.

I would suggest a 4890, it's between the performance of a GTX260 and a GTX285, on par with the GTX275. The only problem is is that it uses ATI's reference HS set up, which can get quite fast and loud at high speeds, although as long as there is a decent fan profile going it can remain cool without killing your eardrums

Am running a q9550 myself with the Gainward 260 @1920x1200. - It copes well and is pretty quiet.

I upgraded from a 512mb 4870 and the new card certainly copes better - if nothing else the extra ram helps at the res. I run.

I was tempted by the 4890 but it was at the time £20+ more , I read it could be noisy (& coming from a 4870 I knew how noisy they can be) and I fancied a change from Amd.

If I were buying now I'd probably take the risk ref. noise levels and get the XFX card thats on offer - hardly any more than a 260 and a fair bit more powerful !

If you game at 1680x1050 or less then the 4890 is probably overkill but it'll give you room to ugrade monitor etc :D

It's not the only problem, the other problem is it uses ATI drivers :D

to OP: Get a 260 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-202-AS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=927 will be perfect for your needs

Just because you can't get your PC working, doesn't mean everyone else has the same experiences.

To Harrypainful, ignore this guy, you're just as likely to get problems with either ATi or nVidia, just some people get bitter because they've messed something up in their PC and because they can't fix it, they rage quit and vow never to buy *insert brand here* again.

ATi's cards are the best value for money at the moment, so you'll notice the majoirty of people will be recommending them over nVidia's higer priced but no extra performance cards.

I would go for the 4890 if you don't mind it being loud. Further down the line you might want to upgrade the motherboard and add another 4890. Hopefully with all the new kit coming out, current mobo (P45)/vga card will drop in price.

My PC works fine without the infamous ATI drivers :D
The 260 is cheaper, cooler, uses less power, more silent + has cuda
People always recommend the underdog, even if it is worst, all the people that spend £800+ plus on a AMD 955 when even core2 rapes it, yet alone the i7

My PC also works fine with ATi drivers.

Also, your example makes no sense what so ever.

I'm advising the op not to buy an overpriced nvidia card because he's going to get no visable advantage from it for a lot more money.

Seriously, why would you buy a GTX285 for £240 when you can get a 4890 for £140 that's pretty much just as fast?

I have a Q9550 and I intend to ugrade my 4850 to 2x 4890s very soon.

Won't be crossfire tho, I just want 3 monitors running.

I would recommend at least one 4890, ATI rocks!

  • If you are already using ATi and you like Ati then stick with Ati (get the best cheapest one you can)
  • If you are already using Nvidia and you like Nvidia then stick with Nvidia (get the best cheapest one you can)

That way, its easier technically, you don't have to do mad driver cleaning procedures, you avoid disappointment and it prevents you catcing paranoid fanboiism syndrome.

I used to run a Q9550 with a 1Gb 4870 and they were a good pairing, ran Crysis etc fine on a 22" TFT.
I'd go for a 4890 as they are excellent value for money at the moment, or if you can stretch your budget to it then get an X2 card as there are some cracking deals to be had! :)

Who said about 285? 275 cleans the floor against 4890, the 260 being the best bang for buck and don't sound like a xbox360 as the 4890 :p but then again you can cook an egg on the 4890 ;)

Is that crap game the only thing you play?

Check the other benchmarks, for 30 quid less on the 4890 it's pretty safe to say these cards are even.

Then again for cheaper than a GTX275 you can get a 4890 with a good cooler.

Even? ATI has very narrow memory Interface and no cuda
Do you fail to see the cheaper priced 260 beats the 4890 also?
